About this trip

The Venediger Hut Trek is the Alps at their wildest. Over four days you walk around the Großvenediger in East Tyrol, through flower-filled alpine meadows, along narrow paths below jagged rock peaks, and past glaciers that come right down to the trail.

Every night is spent in a classic mountain hut: the Eisseehütte above the Timmeltal, the Johannishütte under the glaciers, and the Essener-Rostocker Hütte, surrounded by more than 20 three-thousanders. You eat hearty Tyrolean food, share a dormitory, and wake up high in the mountains.

This trip is shorter than the TMB, but more alpine. The paths are narrower and rockier. On day two you cross the Zopatscharte, at almost 3,000 metres, with a steep scree climb and short cabled sections. You need to be sure-footed and comfortable with some exposure. No climbing experience is needed.

The days themselves are manageable: 3 to 5 hours of walking, with the toughest climb on day one.

Every one of our trips has demanding mountain days. Choose based on how many hard days in a row you are ready for.

Itinerary

  1. Day1

    Prägraten to Eisseehutte

    • Austria
    • 6 km
    • 1,210 m up
    • 0 m down
    • 4 h

Up through the Timmeltal on forest roads and narrower paths, past the Bodenalm and the Ochsnerhütte, with a steep final climb to the hut. You arrive in time for the Eisseehütte’s famous home cooking and views over the valley.

  2. Day2

    Eisseehutte to Johannishütte

    • Austria
    • 7.6 km
    • 610 m up
    • 1,010 m down
    • 6 h

The big day. You pass the turquoise Eissee lake, where edelweiss grows along the path, then climb to the Zopatscharte at almost 3,000 m. The last section is steep, with scree and some fixed cables. The descent brings you to the Johannishütte, sitting right below the glaciers.

  3. Day3

    Johannishütte to Rostocker Hütte

    • Austria
    • 7.6 km
    • 690 m up
    • 600 m down
    • 4 h

The big day. You pass the turquoise Eissee lake, where edelweiss grows along the path, then climb to the Zopatscharte at almost 3,000 m. Near the top there are a few short sections with fixed cables to hold on to over steeper rock. They need care and a steady step, but they aren’t difficult, and you don’t need a harness or any climbing gear. After that, a long descent brings you to the Johannishütte, sitting right below the glaciers. Shorter option: the direct route via the Zopatscharte skips the lake (↑ 460 m · ↓ 860 m · 3.5–4 h).

  4. Day4

    Rostocker Hütte to Ströden

    • France
    • 6 km
    • 0 m up
    • 810 m down
    • 2 h

An easy descent through the Maurertal and across alpine meadows to Ströden. Add the Umbal Falls on the way (↑↓ 250 m, about 1.5–2 h), one of the most impressive waterfalls in the Alps. A bus or taxi takes you back to Prägraten.
